Gerbil Life......

We have been trustworthy to date so today we were able to get out of our cage and go to the wheel to get some exercise. A trip to the local track for an hour or so run, (sherri walked) helped to get the day off right. I would not consider the town unsafe, but it is just not the kind of place for two people as foreign as we are to venture too far from the main drag. So we will walk the few blocks to the tracks and run lots of circles. And now we know what the gerbils feel like when they are in their cages all day but occasionally get the treat of running as fast as they can to make no progress.

Today was a very good day with Jacob. When we had first visited JC for a few weeks, he finally relaxed enough with us to stop crying as soon as we walked in the room and then to fall asleep on Sherri's shoulder. This was the moment we knew JC would accept us and we could make this work. Jacob must be an early adopter. He smiles brightly every time we walk in the room and today he fell asleep on Sherri's shoulder. He seems to have two emotions, happy and very happy. He enjoys it most when all get on the floor and crawl around together. Sherri brought her computer today so we could look at pictures and listen to kids music. He was glued to the monitor as we played the H-A-P-P-Y song, Mickey Mouse and others while looking at pictures of JC, Sparky, Abby and all the family.

After our morning visit, we went to the local museum with our facilitator and her daughter and she showed us some of the proud history of Kazakhstan and this region. It probably will not compete with the Smithsonian for any awards, but it had some very interesting displays that included a full size Yurt - a traditional home for the nomadic sheperds and farmers, an actual space capsule that appeared to have seen better days and some of the famous people from Arkalyk.

On the way home, we decided to get some water and beer for later. Our facilitator also bought a beer and decided we should have a happy afternoon. So we went to our flat and enjoyed some cookies and beer with Habiba and Rose and talked about Kazakhstan, the adoption process, and other small talk until it was time for our afternoon visit with Jacob.

It was a very pleasant afternoon so we asked if we could go outside for our visit and this was OK with the bosses. In the afternoon, there is outside play time for all the kids. There are two fenced in play yards, one for smaller kids up to about 2 and one for older kids up to about 4. The yards are filled with slightly smudged and oddly dressed but beautiful children. They meander about the slightly bent and multicolored play equipment and sandboxes - more dirt than sand, doing what kids do. Also in the yard of the baby home is a small area with various trees, bushes and flowers among the dandelions. We spent our hour looking at the white and yellow flowers on the trees, looking at the kids playing and mostly chewing on the little tikes phone that Aunt Susie gave JC. Don't tell JC that Jacob has already commandeered one of his toys. If he finds out, it will become his favorite I am sure. We kept him for about 20 minutes longer than we should and returned him to his caregivers who genuinely seem to love him very much.

Then it was back for dinner, noodles cooked in oil, a really big fat hot dog - Sherri's favorite and some cucumbers and tomatoes. Not quite Q'Doba but we have yet to feel hungry.

Tomorrow we will visit the new pool they have in town. Tomorrow is also the first day of summer vacation for all the kids in town so we might have a crowd.

All is well and keep those posts coming, thanks for following along and we love to hear from you all.

Tim and Sherri

What a great photo!

Love the comments about the gerbil wheel, sounds so very true. You don't appreciate freedom of movement until you have it taken away. Glad to hear that they are at least letting you get out somewhat.

Looks like you have a thumb sucker like my two. Mine will be sucking their thumbs until they are 21, so maybe you will have some suggestions on how to stop it!

Keep the posts coming, we are loving reading the blog. Ella and Luke cannot wait to meet Jacob. They want to keep looking at the pictures

Love,
Katie, Pete, Luke and Ella

Tim and Sherri I had a wonderful letter full of info written and must have hit a magic eraser button. Part of it was that I promised myself an early bedtime. Better stick with that for now will write more tomorrow.
They are so precious when they are sleeping. He is such a winner! I did have an awakening today in regards to Jill vs. Jake. Jake will not make a very good flower girl next Sept. Sooooo Aunt Jill stop working on JC's male tendencies. We may need to put him in sparkle flip flops, paint his nails and give him a basket of rose petals...
Much love

Sherri and Tim,
Jacob is the cutest! All of the photos are great, especially the one of him asleep on your shoulder. You fit each other perfectly! What an amazing opportunity you're having to bond. I don't know what happened to my previous post... it's in cyberspace somewhere, or confusing some other adoptive family (you know, like a wrong number)...but I must say we are continually thrilled for you! We can't wait to meet Jacob. I'm sure J.C. is missing you now, but he'll be thanking you once he has his new brother home!
XOXOXOXOXOXO
Alice, Jeff, and Tommy

Sherri and Tim,
I have thought about you all week but have had web trouble and couldn't send a line.
Cary and I are so happy for you and your cute little guy. Looks like Lauren will have a new boyfriend real soon!
You all must have nerves of steel to be able to go through this process! Keep it up because it is worth it in the end!
Fondly,

We love Jake the great already. He is so adorable. Can't wait to pinch those cheeks.
Tim the flooring is now going forward now finally. New selection Arlie helped with is even better than the first one... and it's available. Schedualed for the 13 of May. May be another reason not to hurry back, Should all be finished by the 15th. If you didn't know Dwane's mom is very ill In Chicago so we are handling this, Arlie, Harold, Dan, and I on our own. I'm sure everything will go fine and Mike won't have to eat any words due to his premature promise. Sorry to all you bloggers to use this space for business.
Back to Jake the Great and Katie and thumb sucking.
I have some experience on that subject... My 22 year old hardly ever sucks her thumb any more... Just kidding thumb suckers are happy and in my book never mess with what makes them happy. Rarely do you see kindergartners sucking their thumbs if they do the other kids will take care of that for you. Not to worry! They give it up when they don't need it any more. My experience is the less said about the subject the better. Relax and thank your lucky stars that they are thumb suckers!
Now what can we do about a flower girl.
Sherri the pool is up and running, when you get home we will wallow a bit I hope... well as much as one can wallow with a 2 year old. Perhaps I should clean out the tree house? It's not much higher than his "tree house" Maybe you would like to schedual play day at our house some time. I would love that!
Well I don't think I have any more news or advise either one. Oh an update on Bobbys hand, he didn't hurt it when he fell. Thank the Lord! His graduation party is going to be on the 16 of June, maybe you will be home and can come have a few beers with me and us.
I am at work so I better get off and be productive.
Love to you all, never ceasing to pray for a smooth and event free time there for you and all the people who have to have a hand in the paperwork for Jake the Great, and for his birth mother too. I'm sure she will struggle with this as I would.
Love again
Aunt Debby

I'm so happy for you guys! Sounds like Jacob is the perfect fit! Look like we'll have the Kaz Trio going on in STL with Logan, JC & Jacob.
Tim, I expect that you'll have Sherri hooked on James Bond by the time you get back.
It seems that you're not having a problem getting internet access, a very good thing.
I hope you earn more freedom's to keep the Cabin Fever in check.
Best of luck.
